Summer Weddings in Charleston

Ah, summer weddings. Charleston is a highly sought after vacation location and should probably rank 1st for destination weddings year round. There is the peninsula with its beautiful churches, homes and streets... and the beaches, among the most scenic in the country... and all the wonderful world-class restaurants!  That is not to say that there can’t be challenges.

Charleston is a tad warm in the summer with many days in the 90s with humidity to match. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence. But a good event  planner and good music coordinator will know to have the weatherman in their back pockets and be prepared to adjust to changing conditions. This past weekend our trio played at a beautiful wedding at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, 40 minutes south of Charleston. The day dawned with an interesting weather forecast: mostly cloudy…a chance of showers and thunderstorms…mainly by the afternoon. Highs in the lower 90s…except in the upper 80s near the coast. We envisioned shedding our tuxedo jackets for the ceremony. We arrived at the ocean front venue early and scanned the horizon, seeing the gray skies with the striated bands of rain-bearing clouds. We surveyed the preparations as the florist wove hydrangeas into the wedding arch where the bride and groom would say their vows. We wondered, "will this couple get their picture-perfect outside wedding?"

Monitoring the Doppler weather radar, the event coordinator and I went over several options in the event of actual rain, all the time hoping the wedding couple would be able to have their outdoor ceremony overlooking the ocean. Miraculously the weather cleared and our trio played the prelude and wedding ceremony outside as planned. The raindrops came sporadically as the last guests walked to their cars to the stately notes of the postlude to head to the reception. As we drove the scenic parkway from the tip of the island to the main gate, we looked at the beautiful foliage and paused to watch a doe and fawn nibbling the leaves. Vacationers and residents were riding their bicycles on the sidewalk; kayakers were on the river. Such is a Charleston wedding. In Charleston the weather can shift in an instant, and the experienced musicians and event planners know how to be creative and flexible to make the fairy tale ending come true.
